The History of Christmas in Strasbourg

The origins of Strasbourg's Christmas market

There has been an open market in Strasbourg since the Middle Ages, but it was not until 1570 that it became a real Christmas market. The German origins of Strasbourg’s culture gave the name "Christkindelsmärik,” which means "Baby Jesus Market," to its Christmas Market. This authentic name takes us back to the 16th century, when Strasbourg opted for the Protestant Reformation and abandoned the market in honour of Saint Nicholas. This event took place in early December. Thus, the market became a place where people went to buy gifts, especially gingerbread cookies for children.

Shaping Christmas traditions

The city is believed to have hosted one of the earliest recorded Christmas markets in Europe, especially in France, because, at the time, the Christmas market phenomenon was limited to Germanic countries. These markets were originally held around Strasbourg Cathedral and became a lively gathering place for locals to share their festive joy. One of the main features of this Christmas tradition in the Germanic world is the Christmas tree. The first documented use of a Christmas tree in Strasbourg dates back to 1605 when a tree adorned with apples, paper flowers, and candles was erected in the city. This early manifestation of the Christmas tree tradition paved the way for the grand spectacle that is now the iconic Christmas tree towering over Place Kléber. It is often said that the custom of Christmas trees spread in France from 1870 when the Alsatians refused to annex Prussia and settled further west in France. Strasbourg was a model for other famous French cities wishing to offer a magical Christmas experience. Therefore, in the 2000s, Christmas madness gripped the entire country; the famous Christmas market of the Champs Elysées in Paris is a good example of how Strasbourg has shaped French Christmas traditions

The evolution of the Strasbourg Christmas market over the years

Over the years, the market has grown and expanded, becoming an integral part of Strasbourg's Christmas traditions. Its unique location on the border of France and Germany significantly impacts Christmas celebrations. This cultural duality is evident in the Christmas traditions of Strasbourg, where French elegance and Germanic warmth coexist harmoniously to create a truly unique celebration. This main function of the Place Kléber as a Christmas market will not leave Strasbourg for the next five centuries. Until the 1980s, Strasbourg was the only organized market in France. Indeed, the Christmas markets of Mulhouse, Colmar and Metz, for instance, are much younger. Furthermore, the Strasbourg Christmas market seemed to have lost its vitality in the late 1980s. Its renovation is thanks to the Alsace Hoteliers Association: December and January were the least touristy months of the year, so regional authorities decided to promote Strasbourg and Alsace during Christmas to attract visitors. After a few years of extensive media coverage, Strasbourg became the “Capital of Christmas” in 1992 - as claimed by the French government.
